A dictionary attack is a type of brute-force attack where an attacker tries to gain unauthorized access to a system by systematically trying all possible combinations of passwords from a predefined list (dictionary).

Step 3: Setting up the Environment

Before we begin, make sure you have the following:

  • Kali Linux machine (attacker machine)
  • Target web server

Step 4: Obtaining a Password Dictionary

  1. Open a terminal on your Kali Linux machine.
  2. Download a password dictionary from a reliable source or create your own dictionary file containing a list of commonly used passwords.

Step 5: Launching the Attack

  1. Open a terminal on your Kali Linux machine.
  2. Use a tool like hydra to perform the dictionary attack on the target web server. For example, you can use the following command:
    hydra -l <username> -P <dictionary_file> <target_ip> http-post-form "/login.php:user=^USER^&pass=^PASS^:Invalid credentials"
    Replace <username> with the target web server's username, <dictionary_file> with the path to your password dictionary file, and <target_ip> with the IP address of the target web server.

Step 6: Analyzing the Results

  1. Once the dictionary attack is complete, analyze the results to identify any successful login attempts.
  2. Use the compromised credentials to gain unauthorized access to the target web server.

To defend against dictionary attacks, consider implementing the following measures:
